What is an award flight?

An award flight is a flight booked using frequent flyer miles or loyalty points instead of paying the cash fare. When you fly with an airline or earn points through a credit card, those points can be redeemed for "award seats" that airlines release on their flights.

Every flight typically has a limited number of award seats available. These seats are offered at a fixed points price set by the airline's award chart, plus a small amount of taxes and fees paid in cash. For example, a British Airways business class flight from London to New York might cost 50,000 Avios plus around $250 in taxes, compared to a cash price of $3,000 or more.

Award flights are available across all cabin classes: Economy, Premium Economy, Business, and First Class. The number of points required increases with the cabin class, but the value you get per point also tends to increase significantly in premium cabins.
